Communicating AI research to non-scientists is an exciting and rewarding challenge! It requires explaining complex mathematical principles in a way that is both understandable and engaging, while avoiding science fiction narratives. We are pleased to offer this workshop series to address this issue by providing participants with concrete strategies and tips for communicating their research in a clear and vivid manner. Join us and let's make AI research accessible to everyone!
The experienced trainers of the University of Tübingen's RHET AI Center offer two workshops this year for IMPRS-IS scholars: First, the “Foundations of Science Communication” series, in which participants build stylistic, visual, and performative skills in AI science communication. Second, we offer the “Project Development” series, which focuses on helping you bring your own projects to life using design thinking principles and other creative techniques. The workshops can be taken independently of one another. However, if you have already attended the Foundations, you will find it easier to participate in the Project Development Series.

1. Day 1: Communicating AI Research • Opportunities and challenges of science communication • Overview and dimensions of science communication formats and (social) media communication channels • Instructive strategies for communicating to different target audiences • Getting to know formats and contexts of science journalism and public relations • Core messages, comprehensible explanations and illustrative storytelling
2. Day 2: Pitch Perfect Presentation • Master presentation techniques, especially for short and effective pitches • Communicate key messages emphatically and confidently • Differentiate between explanation, advice and persuasion • Presentation of science communication projects, giving and receiving feedback
3. Day 3: Visualization • Basics of successful visualizations • Visual core messages and visual abstracts • Infographics and data visualization • Developing a poster for a pitch presentation
More about our Trainers
Dr. Markus Gottschling Markus is head of the Communicative Competence Unit of RHET AI Center and has been leading workshops in presentation, science communication and project management for more than 10 years. Under his leadership, the certificate program Science Communication was developed and successfully established at the University of Tübingen.
Viktorija Völker Viktorija is a rhetorician with focus on argumentation and humour research. As a project manager and trainer she is active in the certificate program “Science Communication and Media Competence” at the Graduate Academy of the University of Tübingen and in the Communicative Competence Unit of the RHET AI Center.
Michael Pelzer Michael is a rhetorician with a focus on Knowledge Design. For several years, he has been advising university institutions on design and visualizations in the field of science communication. He develops and leads workshops on visual science communication and knowledge design for Tübingen university’s Sharing Knowledge initiative.
