The new research building is now open. It offers state-of-the-art laboratory and collaboration spaces for AI researchers from the University of Tübingen and MPI-IS. Many IMPRS-IS doctoral students have already begun working in the new space!
A new chapter begins for the Tübingen AI community as Cyber Valley I, the flagship research facility of the Cyber Valley Innovation Campus, officially opens its doors. The striking new building is now home to several leading research groups, including the Autonomous Vision Group led by Prof. Andreas Geiger. More groups affiliated with the University of Tübingen, the Tübingen AI Center, and MPI-IS are also in the process of moving in.
This milestone represents a significant investment in the region’s future as a global center for artificial intelligence. Cyber Valley I was conceived to provide needed space for interdisciplinary research in fields such as machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and human-AI interaction. It is the first completed structure in a long-term campus development plan that envisions two additional research buildings—Cyber Valley II and III—by the end of the decade.
A Space Designed for Collaboration and Innovation
The five-story building boasts approximately 7,000 square meters of floor space, including vehicle-accessible experimental laboratories on the ground floor, modern lecture halls, seminar rooms, offices, and collaborative lounges. The building’s dramatic atrium hall spans multiple floors and is topped with a translucent ETFE roof, flooding the space with natural light and fostering informal interaction between scientists, students, and guests.
The facility also features a roof terrace, sustainable design elements such as photovoltaic panels and green roofing, and an architectural envelope that balances aesthetics with energy efficiency. Designed by Heinle, Wischer und Partner, the structure offers a welcoming environment for both the academic community and the general public, as the building is open and accessible.
Strategic Growth at the Heart of Europe’s AI Landscape
The opening of Cyber Valley I is a core part of the broader Cyber Valley initiative, a research ecosystem that brings together partners from academia, industry, and government. Funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg with a budget of nearly €56 million, the new building reflects a shared vision to anchor Europe’s leadership in ethical, cutting-edge AI research.
A Highlight of the IMPRS-IS Boot Camp 2025
We are pleased to feature Cyber Valley I as a highlight of its upcoming Boot Camp, taking place September 24–26. While the main program will be held at other campus venues, participants will have the opportunity to tour the new building, explore its research spaces, and learn about its role in shaping the future of AI in Tübingen.
A New Era for Tübingen AI
With Cyber Valley I now open, Tübingen’s role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence has entered a dynamic new phase. As new groups move in and campus development continues, the building is poised to become a landmark of international research excellence—one that reflects both the scientific ambitions and community values of the region.
