In the event that all attendees are unable to check in at both reception desks before the start of the program at 11:00, check in will continue during the lunch break. If this applies to you, please simply enter the lecture hall with your belongings at 11:00.
The 2022 IMPRS-IS will uphold all health and safety guidelines for this event as set forth by the Staatsministerium Baden-Württemberg.
Maintaining the health and safety of our community is of the utmost importance. If at any time before or during the event you feel ill or are displaying cold-like symptoms, please contact the IMPRS-IS coordination office immediately.
In an effort to reduce the potential spread of the Coronavirus, self-tests and masks will be offered at the IMPRS-IS reception desk throughout the event.
We ask that all participants self-test themselves sometime within the 24-hours leading up to the event’s departure on the morning of Wednesday, September 28. Self-tests will be available once participants reach the venue should anyone begin feeling ill.
Again, if you are feeling ill for any reason or if you have a physical injury of any sort, please contact the IMPRS-IS coordination office by email using URGENT in the subject line or directly come to the event’s reception desk for support.
The boot camp will feature three keynote presentations by IMPRS-IS faculty. Speakers are listed here by presentation order.
The boot camp will feature scholar lightning talks from 14:00 - 15:00 on Monday, September 28. The presentation order for the talks is as follows.
The boot camp will feature a poster session on the evening of Monday, September 28, split into two hour-long sessions. Scholar Presenters: Poster Session A 19:00 - 20:00
Scholar Presenters: Poster Session B 20:00 - 21:00
In addition to the faculty keynotes, the program will feature scientific talks from the following IMPRS-IS faculty and associated faculty written below in order of presentation.
On Thursday beginning at 16:00, boot camp attendees will participate in team-building activites. Scholars can find which activity they have been assigned to below.
Ball Run Build
Catapult Build
Drone Activity
Highland Games
Painting Activity
From 11:00 - 12:00 on Friday, September 30, participants will choose to participate in one the following tutorials lead by MPI-IS ZWE researchers and other prominent members of our scientific community. Participants should sign up for an activity prior to joining. Sign up sheets will be available starting Wednesday of the boot camp at the reception desk.
Best Practices in High Performance Computing Jojumon Kavalan Location: Große Grotte Description: In this tutorial we will discuss some best practices that will help achieve better performance on computing clusters and avoid bottlenecks. We will also introduce the computing infrastructure in MPI-IS and in MPCDF Garching, and share tips on using these clusters in an efficient way, along with case studies. Pre-requisites: Basic programming knowledge in any language, Basic usage of Linux (or similar) operating system.
Bringing Order Into the Noise: Simulating Stochastic Systems Dr. Victor Buendia Location: Blautopf Description: Random fluctuations play a very important role in all kind of physical, biological, and social systems. Understanding the impact of noise is thus essential to be able to construct theoretical models that capture the key features of our favourite systems. Far away from just mangling and distorting the data, noise is able to make order emerge from disorder, contributing to pattern formation, helping synchronization and altering apparent deterministic dynamics. In this tutorial, I will give a short introduction on how to deal with noise in dynamical systems and networks with diverse topologies, focusing on neuroscience, critical behaviour and optimality. We will explore some counterintuitive effects of noise with hands-on exercises. Finally, we will derive and simulate a rate-based neuronal network, studying how its natural internal fluctuations differ from usual white and colored noise. Computational Astrophotography and Lucky Imaging Dr. Valentin Volchkov Location: Kleine Grotte Description: Lucky imaging is a fun and conceptually simple method to obtain impressive images of celestial bodies even under suboptimal conditions. This computational technique allows one to bypass image corruption originating from atmospherical turbulences by stacking only the highest quality samples out of a large number of images of a celestial body. For this tutorial we are going to record datasets of images of Jupiter and Saturn on-site. We will briefly discuss the ideas behind lucky imaging and its potential. Then we will go step-by-step through the pre-processing, analysing and stacking of the images using a (free) specialized software. The goal is to be able to play with the parameters in order to further improve the output. Introduction to 3rd Party Funding Dr. Richard Segar Location: Schöne Lau Description: Getting external funding is an integral part of an academic research career. This introduction gives an overview of funding opportunities, especially for the early post-doc and group leader phase. The session will include Q&A and discussion.
Rapid Prototyping of Mechatronic Systems Dr. Jonathan Fiene Location: Dining Tent Description: The ability to quickly transform new ideas into tangible systems allows us to check assumptions, validate hypotheses, and often gain valuable insights beyond what we can realize via design, simulation, and/or virtual modeling. In this tutorial we will discuss a general framework for prototyping that can be applied to a wide variety of mechatronic systems, followed by an exploration of the most popular and readily available tools and resources.
Things You Should Know Before Dr. Jean-Claude Passy Location: Blaubeurer Alb Description: In this tutorial, you will be exposed to important aspects of software development which will help you to write higher-quality code. These concepts will be illustrated using live coding examples and code snippets. Risk: An Interactive Workshop Dr. Rebecca Reisch Location: Bistro Description: In this tutorial we will look at the concept of risk as a success factor in academia and entrepreneurship. At the end of our session each participant will be one step closer to understanding their individual comfort zone related to risk. Put into perspective by how this relates to others. And developing first ideas how to better align personal goals and individual risk management.
It is time again to elect student representatives for IMPRS-IS. Representatives serve for approximately one year. Our program has four reps total, one for each of our four main sites - University of Stuttgart, University of Tübingen, MPI-IS Stuttgart, and MPI-IS Tübingen. On Friday, September 30, from 12:00 - 12:45, scholars will meet to elect a new representative for their work site. The list below shows the meeting locations for our various sites.
University of Stuttgart - Meet in room Blautopf
University of Tübingen - Meet in room Blaubeurer Alb
MPI-IS Stuttgart - Meet in room Schöne Lau
MPI-IS Tübingen - Meet in room Große Grotte
On Friday from 14:00 - 15:30, attendees will split into groups participating in one of four parallel sessions. Everyone will first report to the Blaubeurer Alb lecture hall for a 15 minute introduction before relocating to participate in one of the four sessions.
