Taking on a control engineer’s perspective, Patricia focuses on the analysis and design of robust neural networks. Some of her noteworthy achievements are holding one out of 16 oral presentations at L4DC 2023 as well as publishing 9 peer-reviewed first-author papers.
Paula has published at control conferences such as CDC and L4DC, control journals such as IEEE Control Systems Letters, as well as at the machine learning conference ICLR.
She joined IMPRS-IS in May 2019, working at the Institute for Systems Theory and Automatic Control (IST) at the University of Stuttgart under the supervision of Professor Frank Allgöwer. Her research interests are at the intersection of control theory and machine learning. More specifically, Patricia’s research focuses on the robustness analysis of neural networks and the design of robust neural networks. Using well-established control tools, she derives certificates for neural networks and designs neural networks with desired robustness properties, e.g. Lipschitz-bounded neural networks.
In addition to her doctoral studies, Patricia is a valuable member of the IMPRS-IS community, actively volunteering and engaging with peers at bootcamps. She has also been a featured speaker of the IMPRS-IS Think & Link talk series.
Patricia holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and a M.Sc. in both Mechanical Engineering and Computational Engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, where she specialized in automatic control and machine learning. During her B.Sc. she spent one semester at the Technical University of Madrid, and during her M.Sc. studies she was at the University of California, Berkeley for two semesters. Patricia concluded her studies with a master thesis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Anuradha Annaswamy.
In 2022, Patricia spent a three-month research stay at the Australian Centre for Robotics at the University of Sydney, hosted by Ian Manchester. She has collaborated with researchers from all over the world, including the University of Sydney, University of Oxford, RWTH Aachen, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Beside conducting research, Patricia serves as the academic exchange coordinator at the IST, advising outgoing and incoming students on their plans to study abroad. She has also been a teaching assistant for the classes “Introduction to Automatic Control” and “Multivariable Control”. In addition, Patricia has supervised a large number of Bachelor and Master thesis projects that were directly linked to her research. In her free time, Patricia plays handball at MTV Stuttgart and enjoys traveling.
